Local veterans participate in Honor Flight

Highlands residents, Lauch “Lock” Magruder and Paul Schowalter, were two of 91 veterans to take an honor flight, organized by Blue Ridge Honor Flights in Hendersonville, to the nation’s capital on April 23. “They were a delight to have on the flight,” Flight Coordinator JoAnn Naeger said.

2022 ELECTION RESULTS: Macon County elects new sheriff

With the close of the May primary election on May 17, Macon County now knows who its next sheriff will be. Brent Holbrooks was the top vote-getter in the field of Republicans running to replace outgoing sheriff Robert Holland, who has served in the position since 2002.

Lady Highlanders stomp Hayesville on senior night, tie for first in conference

The Highlands School Lady Highlander varsity soccer team is on a hot streak, winning the last three games against Blue Ridge, Hayesville and Murphy, tying themselves with Swain County High School for first place in the Little Smoky Mountain Conference.

Five Republican candidates are vying to be the next sheriff of Macon County. Long-time sheriff Robert Holland announced his retirement in June 2021; he was first elected to the office in 2002.
