Letter to the Editor

You know – the goose laying the golden eggs – also known as the unique character and ambiance of our lovely mountain town. Commercial and resident needs are symbiotic, and both need to be protected. In the 20 years I’ve lived here, commercial needs seem to be over-served.

Christmas shopping best done locally

As you are reading this, there are only 19 shopping days left until Christmas.     Don’t panic, there’s still time to cross off all of the immediate family and those rarely seen nieces and nephews from the shopping list.

Everything must be going perfectly in Highlands. That’s the most logical explanation for why the Macon County Planning Board got stood up on Thursday, Nov. 21.

My mother thought Thanksgiving was the most important holiday of the year, and she believed this holiday allowed families to gather and pay tribute to the Divine Creator who gave us all the blessings in life.

It looks like Mother Nature may have thrown the Highlands area a curve ball in 2019.     Everyone knows the four seasons are spring, summer, fall and winter, but this year the seasonal calendar has apparently flipped straight past autumn.

There were a lot of activities in Highlands this past holiday weekend. The Highlands Food and Wine Festival had another large turnout. It attracts visitors from all across the country.

Iconic rap group Public Enemy probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when guests visit the Highlands Food and Wine Festival.     But the 1980s hip-hop outfit and Highlands’ premier November event do have one thing in common – Hype.

I remained quiet and neutral during the election. Congratulations to those who won and to all candidates on the ballot. Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote. Now I want to respond to a general notion that was manifested in various forms during the election.

On Tuesday, Nov. 5, Highlands residents will get the opportunity to put their rights to use. Election Day 2019 might not have the star power of a presidential or governor’s race on the ballot, but that doesn’t mean that the local races are unimportant.
