St. Dale author to host book-signing at Shakespeare & Co.

New York Times best-selling author and author of the award-winning novel, St. Dale, Sharyn McCrumb will be speaking and signing books at Shakespeare and Co. bookstore on Friday, June 10, from 2 p.m. until 3:30 p.m., during Highland’s annual Motoring Festival.

Gorge Road to be closed next week for repairs

A section of U.S. 64 in the Cullasaja Gorge will be closed for five days starting June 6 in order for a contractor to repair a critical wall and for N.C. Department of Transportation crews to safely conduct additional maintenance.

Highlands Historical Society hosts reopening

The Highlands Historical Society held their seasonal opening on Sunday, May 29. The event also marked the official opening of the society’s eight new exhibits which were put together with the help of a class at Western Carolina University.

Need for volunteers clear after first-ever Highlands Volunteer Fair

With Highlands Chamber of Commerce hosting the first-ever Highlands Volunteer Fair last week, the need for volunteers at various organizations in the community is clear, after 20 organizations showed up to the Highlands Community Building.

Local veterans participate in Honor Flight

Highlands residents, Lauch “Lock” Magruder and Paul Schowalter, were two of 91 veterans to take an honor flight, organized by Blue Ridge Honor Flights in Hendersonville, to the nation’s capital on April 23. “They were a delight to have on the flight,” Flight Coordinator JoAnn Naeger said.

TL&LC summer camp registration now open

The Literacy and Learning Center is gearing up for its annual summer camp. Though the theme is not yet decided, senior program manager Anna Norton said they are hard at work at the center. “Typically, we base our theme on a book,” Norton said. “This year, we will have two weeks of summer camp.
