With an audience sea of pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Highlands Volleyball’s blue and gold faced Hiwassee Dam’s blue and white Thursday. Highlands left with an unfortunate 3-0 loss on Senior Night. Following a JV win against Hiwassee Dam, Highlands paused to congratulate its senior class.

Cullasaja Women’s Outreach recently announced the results of its 2023 fundraising campaign. The independent collective of 99 women, focused on local philanthropy, is awarding $355,000 in grants to Highlands and Cashiers area not-for-profit organizations.

On Friday, Fontana Regional Library will host author Jeffrey D. Lofton at Cashiers and Highlands. Lofton will be discussing his book “Red Clay Suzie,” a book that draws inspiration from Lofton’s personal experiences growing up as an outsider. Lofton will appear at the Cashiers library at 1 p.m.

Chamber lease extended, discussions to continue

The Highlands Board of Commissioners gathered last week for the its regularly scheduled monthly meeting. The agenda notably included the current Chamber of Commerce lease, sidewalk construction along Highway 106, and Sanctuary on First before the commissioners held a closed session on Huff v.

Highlands commissioners have added a new meeting, an hour-long discussion, to their agenda with an inaugural session last week. These workshops will be an informational period where commissioners will discuss items that may be voted on at the following month’s town hall.

Highlands varsity volleyball was served a quick 3-0 loss Thursday, Sept. 14 in a home game against Murphy. Highlands had a decent start to the game before momentum tapered off. The first set stayed fairly close with Highlands taking a 25-17 loss.
