A proposed new bank in Highlands took another step forward when the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation granted conditional approval to Highlands Banking Company on June 2.
The new fire station will be located at 149 Franklin Road. The funding for the $6.8 million was made possible by a two-cent fire tax increase.

Weather playing a big factor in construction of new Highlands Fire Department

Construction of the new Highlands Fire Department has begun, but the weather could effect how long it takes to be completed.  In January, the construction was delayed due to a paperwork error when the town tried to close the loan for construction.

After a rain-soaked 2019 outing and the cancellation of 2020’s festivities, the Highlands Motoring Festival returns this weekend, revving into its 14th year as the region’s premiere automotive event. The 2021 schedule features more opportunities for motoring enthusiasts to enjoy than ever.

Town considering $28 million budget

The Highlands budget for the 2021-22 fiscal year was unveiled to the public for the first time during the May board of commissioners meeting. Town manager Josh Ward made the budget presentation and noted that the balanced ledger for the coming year will total $28,468,209.

Nichols awarded Mountain Findings scholarship

Highlands High School graduate Abigail Nichols was awarded the 2021 Mountain Findings Scholarship this year totaling $40,000 over four years.  Mountain Findings was started in 1969 by four ladies to sell donated items to help local Highlands families.
