Groundbreaking at PAC

Last Friday the Highlands Performing Arts Center broke ground on its new $11 million theatre. PAC director Mary Adair Trumbly said the project management, the construction company, the architects, the designers, the theatrical company  have met  twice a month for over a year.

Gettin' the band back together

After several years of being separated, Highlands School teacher Brian Aulisio brought his band back together for two performances at The High Dive last week. The band, Rocksteady@8, had their first show in Tampa, Fla., in 1998. “We used to play in Tampa in the early 2000’s,” Aulisio said.

With school right around the corner, Highlands School has hired several new teachers excited to get into the classroom. Anita Voznyuk McKim is Highlands School’s newest high school English teacher.
Along with Highlands, Dunwoody, Ga., Birmingham, Ala., Lake Murray Country, S.C., Shenandoah Valley, Va. And Lake Nona, Orlanda, Fla., were all named to the Forbes list.

Forbes rates Highlands as one of the best places to travel in 2021

The Town of Highlands was among several cities and towns that made the list of Forbes Top Southern Destinations in 2021. Along with Highlands, Dunwoody, Ga., Birmingham, Ala., Lake Murray Country, S.C., Shenandoah Valley, Va. And Lake Nona, Orlanda, Fla., were all named to the list.

Town gets update on fiber optic cable construction project

The Town of Highlands is one step closer to broadband internet. Information Technology director Matt Shuler gave an update on the town’s construction of fiber optic cables that will enable broadband internet in the town. “We are getting very close to the end,” Shuler said.

Filing for the 2021 municipal elections in Highlands is now closed with several candidates qualifying to run for election. As of Friday, incumbent mayor Patrick Taylor will face current commissioner Marc Hehn.
