Magnolia Republic to host Grand Opening

Though Magnolia Republic has been open since the Fourth of July, the new restaurant will hold its Grand Opening this weekend for the public. The tapas and wine bar was opened by David Cunningham after years of planning. “We have always wanted to do something,” Cunningham said.

HBF creates lecture series in honor of former director

Thanks to an anonymous donor, the Highlands Biological Foundation has created a new lecture series in honor of former director Sonya Carpenter. “Sonya was our director for many years and really shaped the biological foundation into what it is today,” HBF director Charlotte Muir said.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month is a period from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 for recognizing the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture and achievements of the United States. In Highlands one group works daily with the Hispanic community on the Plateau.

New “Snow Fest” coming to Highlands

The Highlands Area Chamber of Commerce plans on bringing a new festival to the town this winter that will bring in more snow. Last Thursday, the Highlands Town Board of Commissioners conditionally approved for the chamber to go ahead and start planning for the new Snow Fest.
The comments come in reference to a decision made during a special called meeting on Aug. 24, where commissioners reached a verbal consensus to enforce all its residential ordinances, which bans short term rentals in R-1.

Public makes more comments on STR situation

At the last regularly scheduled Highlands Town Board of Commissioners meeting, Thursday, Sept. 16, the public comment section was full of people raising issues and protecting short term rentals. The comments come in reference to a decision made during a special called meeting on Aug.

Hudson Library to host adult mental health series

The Hudson Library has partnered with Vaya Health Foundation to bring an Adult Mental Health series to the library. Librarian Carlyn Morenus said one of the main priorities the library system promotes is mental health.

Atlanta-based author sets new novel in Highlands

Atlanta-based high school English teacher and author Christopher Swann has set his newest novel right here on the Plateau. Swann is a graduate of Woodberry Forest School in Virginia and earned his Ph.D. in creative writing from Georgia State University.
