The Highlands Board of Commissioners sat down last week for the first Town Retreat of the 2024 calendar to hear capital requests for the upcoming fiscal year. The town will begin holding budget workshops April 11. Despite rising costs, Mayor Pat Taylor encouraged proactivity for the town.

Gary Maddox, the late president of Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society, has died at 76, leaving behind a legacy of responsible leadership. Maddox passed away Feb. 26. His celebration of life is Saturday, March 23 at 2 p.m.

Varsity girls’ soccer is officially underway for the 2024 season. Highlands visited Summit Charter School Tuesday for both teams’ first games of the year and the Bears walked away with 3-1 victory.
