Mayor on Duty - 5.25.23

I had a crazy, distant uncle who got drunk with a friend one afternoon shortly after December 7, 1941, and they walked into a recruiting office and told the soldiers on duty that they wanted to be paratroopers.  The recruiters made sure their wishes were fulfilled without delay.

Clarence "Doc" Baty

Clarence “Doc” Baty, age 95 of Loganville, GA died Dec. 31, 2022.  A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, 2023 at Highlands Memorial Park Cemetery, Highlands, NC. Mr. Baty was born in Highlands, NC and retired from Scientific Atlanta.

William O. McCoy

William O. McCoy, 89, died peacefully on Christmas Day, December 25, 2022, after a progressive illness. His closest family was by his side at home at The Cedars in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. His wife, Sara, died December 18, last year on their 66th wedding anniversary.    Mr.

Dr. Ray Aiken King Sr.

The Reverend Dr. Ray Aiken King, Sr., of Highlands, passed away peacefully in the morning of Dec. 20, 2022, at Vero Health and Rehab in Sylva, NC. A native of Atlanta, GA, Ray was born on October 11, 1933.

Howard McMillan Jr.

Howard L. McMillan, Jr. was born August 29, 1938, to his wonderful parents, Mary Frances and Howard L. McMillan. He was raised in a loving family environment along with his brother, Wallace Edward McMillan who was born October 28, 1945 and predeceased him in November of 2015.

Sue Story Schulte

Sue Story Schulte, 86, of Highlands, formerly of Atlanta, GA passed away on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022. Born in Fulton County, she was the daughter of the late Travis L. and Sue Pelot Story.

Victoria Calloway Thompson

Victoria Calloway Thompson of Jasper, GA went to be with the Lord on Nov. 6, 2022.  She was born Dec. 24, 1926 in Highlands. Her parents were Claude Lewis and Florence Juanita Henderson Calloway.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Junior Calloway, W. C.

Dr. Alfred Olin Colquitt III

Dr. Alfred Olin Colquitt III of Marietta, Georgia, beloved husband, father and friend to so many, passed away surrounded by loved ones on Friday Dec. 2, 2022 following a long brave battle with Parkinson’s Disease.  He was 79 years young.

Norma Fidelis White

Mrs. Norma Fidelis White age 87 of Griffin passed away December 11, 2022.  Mrs. White was a member of St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church and formerly attended Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church in Highlands, NC.

Mary Lou Ramey

Mary Lou Ramey, age 65, of Mountain Rest, SC, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2022. She was born in Highlands, NC on June 16, 1957, to the late Charles Frank Railey and the late Margie Faye Railey.
