More hungry children, families

Nearly 10% of Macon County’s residents receive help through SNAP – the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Legislation passed in Congress on July 3, will see changes to SNAP benefits. The full impact the legislation will have on Macon County’s 3,855 SNAP recipients is not yet known.

A hundred years after its verdict, the Scopes Monkey Trial, also known as Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes, remains a cultural touchpoint surrounding the teaching of evolution in schools.

Antique show returns to Village Green

The Cashiers Annual Antique Show has been a community staple for nearly 50 years, showcasing an array of antiques ranging from the 18th to mid-20th century. And according to Show Promoter Hazel Giles, this year promises to be a vibrant gathering of history and community spirit.

Wednesday evening, July 2 American Legion Post 370 and several volunteers held its annual ceremony, placing an American flag at veterans’ graves in the Highlands cemetery.     Paul Showalter, Post 370 Commander, addressed the crowd assembled at the 5 p.m.

A family-owned jewelry store, the second-oldest retail establishment in Highlands, is closing after more than 73 years in business. The Highlands Gem Shop on South 4th St. has served generations of customers since it opened in 1956 by Archie and Hazel Jellen.
