Cashiers business owners and residents  gathered at Happs Place Barn and Grill last week to recognize six outstanding members of the community for this year’s “Spirit of Our Community Awards,” hosted by the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce.

Town board addresses Mirror Lake dredging, Chamber lease

The Highlands Town Board at their meeting Thursday night, Nov. 21, heard updates on the Mirror Lake dredging and the Chamber of Commerce lease and heard a pitch from a contractor who could make a new town website.

Housing study dives into Highlands area needs

Macon County and especially the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau, have more difficulty than most places with providing affordable housing, according to the results of the Macon County Housing Needs Assessment. However, the study noted there could be ways to fix the problem going forward.
A crew from Bryson Grading and Paving is working to rebuild NC106 near the Blue Valley Overlook. The roadbed was compromised during heavy rains brought on by Hurricane Helene in September. Work is expected to continue through the end of the year.

No quick fix for NC106

Walking from the Blue Valley Overlook parking area towards Scaly Mountain on what used to be NC106 is like walking back in time. What in September was the main commercial artery into Highlands and Cashiers from the south and west, is now little more than a dirt path.

Micas unveils custom-built veterans memorial

On Monday, local residents and owners of Micas Restaurant and Pub, Mike Quillen, Bob Geyer, and David Verinder, celebrated their first year at the helm by pausing for a moment of prayer, silent reflection, and readings of special poems dedicating an onsite veteran’s memorial.

Enjoying both tricks and treats

The Mario Brothers, Beetlejuice, Leatherface, Poseidon and several Disney characters and witches were among the sightings on Main Street on Thursday evening, Oct. 31 for the town’s annual Halloween Trick or Treat event.
