The pottery class the first week of September at The Bascom got to use the new soda fire kiln to make pots – only the second time it’d ever been used at the facility, according to Frank Vickery, director of ceramics.

Highlands School improvements get green light

The Macon County Board of Commissioners passed $7.9 million in funding for upgrades to Highlands School at their last meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

Summit Foundation awards $105,000 in scholarships

The Summit Charter School Foundation, a nonprofit organization that raises vital funds to support Summit Charter School, a tuition-free K-12 public charter school in Cashiers, is pleased to announce it distributed $101,500 in life changing scholarship funds to Summit’s senior class of 2024.

Motoring Festival gives $105,000 to three nonprofits

The 2024 Highlands Motoring Festival was successful by every measure, including financial support to local human needs charities. To commemorate this accomplishment, there was a presentation of the funds to the three human needs charities at Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park.

The Highlands Community Building on 4th Street was packed to the gills for a special meeting Thursday, Sept. 5, on the topic of a proposed rule to ban short-term rentals (STRs) in some zoning districts in town.

Wade Hampton issues 2024 grants

Wade Hampton Golf Club honored several nonprofits in the Cashiers area at a reception for their Donor Advised Fund, Thursday evening, Aug. 29. The golf club gave $350,000 in grants to the 26 local nonprofits and groups this past year.

Stepping up for bats

Researchers with the Highlands Biological Society are watching and listening to the abandoned mines littered in the high, steep hills of the Plateau, for data they hope will help track bat species in the mines.
